Sleep apnea is a night-time condition that causes the patient to stop breathing at various times throughout the night. Studies have shown that patients usually have pauses in normal breathing hundreds of times each night, each episode lasting up to 30 seconds, if not longer. There are three main types: obstructive, complex, and central. In each type of sleep apnea, your breathing stops too long and too often. But the reason why breathing stops depends on the type.
Obstructive sleep apnea is caused by some sort of blockage that occurs within the airway that impedes the natural flow of breathing. With central sleep apnea, the problems with breathing throughout the night occur because of a miscommunication within the brain. Complex sleep apnea is a combination of these two. This makes diagnosis even more vital as it’s important to not only know if you have it or not, but it’s crucial to know what type you have so that the treatment prescribed to you works flawlessly.

For each patient there is usually a different reason or a combination of factors that cause snoring, but it usually occurs because the soft tissues in the throat along with the soft palate begin to vibrate due to airway restriction. When air isn’t able to flow in and out of your airway freely while you sleep, the tissues within your mouth and throat will begin to vibrate which then causes one to snore. The tissues involved include the:
-Tongue
-Soft palate
-Uvula
-Tonsils
-Adenoids
-Excessive fatty tissues within the throat
Though things such as a poor sleeping position or a cold or other illness may cause you to snore, if you find that you are snoring on a constant basis, it is time to consult with Dr. Roubal so that this problem can be addressed and treated properly. Remember that snoring affects not only you but those around you, especially if it is known to be quite loud.

For those patients who do not do well using the CPAP machine there are many companies who have created other treatment methods. The best alternative to CPAP is the use of oral appliance therapy (OAT) . OAT has been long recognized throughout the dental world as the best alternative treatment and according to the 2015 guidelines issued by the by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) and the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM) , oral appliances are recommended for any patient who is CPAP intolerant or who prefers alternate therapy. Oral appliances are worn at night and are generally compared to mouthpieces. They are designed in such a way that they move the lower jaw forward which then moves the soft tissues of the throat, such as the tongue, forward as well.
The people who are recommended for sleep tests include people who already have a strong suspicion they have sleep apnea and no other sleep disorders. In these cases, the sleep test is able to confirm the diagnosis of sleep apnea with a high degree of certainty.
At-home sleep tests are also appropriate for people who have a hard time getting to a sleep lab, due to immobility or just because there isn’t one around.
At-home sleep tests may be recommended if you aren’t able to get good results from a lab test because of the unfamiliar setting.
Finally, at-home sleep apnea tests are sometimes used to make sure your oral appliance therapy or other sleep apnea treatment is working properly.

Omaha sleep dentist Dr. Roger Roubal treats a firefighter whose snoring and sleep apnea were robbing him of energy. The story of Jeremy Dankiw was featured on KETV-7. First he was told he had loud snoring, but didnt realize how much this was impacting his life, until he got treatment for his sleep apnea.
The case reminds us that men dont have to be overweight or unhealthy to have sleep apnea. It also shows that people who cannot tolerate CPAP can still get effective sleep apnea treatment with oral appliances.

Very disgusted with this place! I moved from another state where I had gotten my sleep device, and merely needed an adjustment. Was told it would be $500 just for them to take over my care. Then when they called to make my appointment, they told me they had verified my benefits and that my visit would just be the copay, and that they would schedule enough time to adjust my appliance also.
When I showed up, the clinical staff was very nice but told me that insurance wouldn't likely cover the $500 fee, and that they did not schedule time to adjust my appliance. Now I've been without it for more than a week (I got a crown, so it no longer fits correctly)and sleeping terribly, so will be attempting to adjust it myself with a drill. Either that or fly back to the state where I got it. Beware if you get into one of these devices that you apparently have to stay in Omaha for the life of the product!

I was very surprised how friendly all the staff was. I felt like I was visiting with her or friends. They were very professional and do go out f their way to explain everything that was truly able to understand so I didn't need ask any questions. I would highly recommend this office if you are having a lot of issues with your sleep patterns. Thank you to the staff at Advanced Sleep.

What a wonderful experience! From the start: from the staff helping make the appointment, to emails telling about the upcoming visit and how to find the office, to emails with details about road closings. During the appointment I felt heard and not rushed. (That's a rarity during medical appointments!) I was asked if I had questions and given materials to take home, along with a business card to call with questions. I will have additional followup with the office but instead of being nervous, I look forward to going back. How many doctors can you say that about?

I have had my appliance a little under a year. The other morning I noticed the hook was broken off, I called that day and they got me in the next day. I was so happy. Anyway, I only went one night without my appliance and by the afternoon I was tired and had a headache, I really can't live without my appliance. I don't snore as much, have less headaches, and don't take naps hardly. Dr Roubal and his team have really changed my life for the better.

I was diagnosed with sleep apnea 15 years ago and did not like the machine. I had heard of Dr Roubal on radio for several years. So in September I decided to check them out. The staff is very helpful and nice. Then I got my mouth piece. The 1st night I got 6 hours continuous sleep. I truly like my piece. I’m finally getting the sleep I’ve been deprived of for years.
If you have apnea and the machine is not your thing. I’d give them a try... I’m sure everyone is different. But it works for me and I’m so happy I finally checked them out.

The staff and Dr. Roubal really made me feel very special. They were very polite and took quite a lot of time educating me on the treatment of sleep apnea. They were very caring and I am blessed to have them caring for me. They all exceeded my expectations! So very glad I went to them. I now have hope that I didn't have before and that means the world to me thank you very much Dr. Roubal and to your staff.

The staff was helpful and answered all my questions. I'm getting way better sleep then I was before. Before the appliance the world was like looking through fog. The first night after using my sleep appliance the world was clear again. I've made better choices after using their appliance, now that I'm getting good sleep again. My visits are always informative. The people are both positive and professional.
