What is a pediatric dentist and how do they differ from "regular dentists"? A pediatric dentist is a specialist who is dedicated to the oral health of children from infancy through the teen-age years. During this "growth" phase of a child, special approaches are needed in dealing with their behavior, and guiding their dental growth and development to minimize or avoid future dental problems.
Our office clinical and business staff have accumulated over 50 years of dental experience. Dr. Leaf encourages continuing education and has supported many of our staff in completing both dental hygiene and dental school. Dr. Leaf and his staff maintain current CPR certification, x-ray certification, and attend many continuing education seminars throughout the year.
Fluoride varnish is a coating that is applied to the outer surface (enamel) of the teeth using a small brush. The varnish adheres to the teeth and sets after contact with saliva. The use of varnish has become widely accepted by dentists and pediatricians alike as it easily tolerated by infants and young children, has a prolonged effectiveness, and has minimal risk of ingestion due to its immediate adherence properties.

I used to go to Dr. Leafs office as a child. Best dentist I've ever had. This is probably the most outdated review ever but man I still remember being in the waiting area with my mom playing Kung Fu arcade. Good times . I just moved back to the area and drove by today. So I thought I'd leave a review.

While I had been going here for years and I liked all the staff, I stopped because I was getting a little bit old. Also, all their equipment is at from at least the early 1990's, and the fountain sinks are the primary example of that. [UPDATE: After seeing the reply, I am adding that my information was from November 2018. There's always a chance of outdated information after over two years.].

We love Dr Nuger and Dr Leaf. This is a pediatric dental office that makes a family feel welcomed from the minute you hit the front office. We have been with them for over 10 years. Both dentist are extremely engaging to little ones and teens as they explain everything that they are going to do. They make the child feel totally relaxed. They remember everything about your child and bring it up in conversation with the child. Their expertise in dentistry is evident. We have found both doctors to be extremely knowledgeable and most importantly honest about dental procedures. Highly recommend.

Wow, I wish we weren't moving so soon! Dr. Leaf and his staff were amazing and really put both me and my child at ease. They were very quick to do what needed to be done, very informative, happy to answer any questions/address any concerns, very kind. I am so satisfied and would give them a more than 5 star recommendation!

I had Doctor Leaf growing up in Fairfax as my dentist. I recently went to a long over due cleaning in MI where I live now. The dentist was incredibly surprised that I still had the "year or two" crowns put in by Dr. Leaf 15 years ago after a sledding accident. There's not much else you can about a doctor when their 1-2 year quality work is still going strong 15 years on. Of course he's a great dentist and nice guy, and I hope he's doing well. I do wonder if he still has the Ms Pacman machine, carousel, and racing horse pictures up.

Dr. Leaf and Dr. Nuger are friendly and have taken care of my two daughters' teeth since we transferred here in August 2018. My 9 year old has benefitted from a removable palatal expander. The staff provided us with the information and my daughter has been diligent in following the instructions. They always complimented her on her hard work and she was motivated to get done with it quickly. We were pleased with the quick progress and her teeth are straighter and smile looks great. Best of all, we don't anticipate she will need braces!

Dr. Leaf is the best dentist! I have been going to him for 15 years, and have now aged out and am sad to be leaving. He is friendly, personable, interested in his patients, and gives effective dental cleaning and services. I have not had a cavity or other major dental problems since attending his office. The office makes the dentist a likable experience, especially for children.
I also know it is a great dentist because some of the hygienists have been working there since I first started, 15 years ago. If you are in the northern Virginia area, this is the pediatric dentist to go to.

Dr. Leaf is the Dentist for all three of my kiddos. I cannot say enough about him, his team and his office staff! He takes his time to explain what is going on, what needs to be done and takes the time with kids. I recently asked my 15 year old if he was ready to move over to an adult dentist office, and he said "no, not yet, I want to to stay at Dr. Leaf's until they kick me out" This is the place to take your kids!

I LOVE Dr. Nuger! SHE IS FANTASTIC! I took my kids in on Friday. We were early. by almost half an hour. Instead of making us wait, they saw my son ( I brought all 3 of my kids) within 5 minutes. The staff was awesome! They took really great care of my youngest who is 6 and was SCARED! They did not try to tell me my kids needed anything they didn't.
They were honest and took wonderful care of my kids. I was REALLY STRESSED AND CRANKY WHEN I GOT THERE. having to deal with a 6 yr old crying and freaking out prior to the dentist appointment idk what mom who would not be. I was a bit rude but the front office took it in stride and I appreciate that and everything they did for me and my kids.

Dr. Leaf is the best pediatric dentist around! I have known Dr. Leaf for almost 30 years. Dr. Leaf treated me as a kid and now I take both of my own children to him. He encourages kids and teaches them about good dental hygiene, his office is a kid friendly place with cool games and activities. My kids love the fish tank. It's a very busy place, usually with 3 or 4 patients going at a time but Dr.
Leaf has ALWAYS made the time to go around and speak to each kid and their parents. He is a real treasure and I hope he never retires! Highly recommend and can't say enough good!

My son has been seeing Dr. Leaf for 5 years now and I love Dr. Leaf as my son's pediatric dentist. My son likes going to see him twice each year also and has absolutely no anxieties about going to the dentist. From a child's perspective, his waiting area and patient area are very inviting and kid friendly. The aquarium, video games and books are wonderful.
My son and I love the outer space/planet theme in the patient area. Dr. Leaf is very personable with my son and seems totally in his element in working with children. His staff is great too. My son has a strong gag reflex and always has trouble with the x-rays; but, his staff is always very patient with him. They recognize his issue and they try to make the process move forward as quickly as possible. He's the best pediatric dentist!

First, if you're expecting to see Dr. Leaf on any of your children's visits, you will be disappointed. Most of the appointments will be attended by one of his hygienists or the other dentists working in the office. Not that this is necessarily bad, but Dr. Leaf never seemed to be there when my child had appointments. As a note, my child had a playground accident in kindergarten, and we were called to the school to pick our child up early.
The accident knocked one tooth up into his gum, and loosened another tooth. We immediately called Dr. Leaf's office, explained the emergency, and asked if they could examine our child's mouth on an emergency basis. They said that they just couldn't fit us in, and that we could be seen the following Monday.the accident occurred early Friday afternoon.
We asked Dr. Leaf's office for advice on what we should do, and they suggested the emergency room. Cool, thanks. As if the situation wasn't bad enough, the lack of empathy, and general rudeness of the office was astounding. Needless to say, we never returned. They do have a cool Pac Man machine, though.

I went to Dr. Leaf for 6+ years when I was little. His child-friendly office made me feel at ease with their space theme. He made me a retainer which helped reduce the amount of orthodontic work I needed. He also explained to me about procedures and showed me his tools to help reduce my anxiety. After they took x-rays they would always show me my teeth and if I had a cavity they would explain to my mom how they knew based on the x-ray. He's a great dentist and I would highly recommend him!

My 10 year old daughter has been a patient of Dr. Leaf's for about 4 years. Dr. Leaf is very friendly and good with all of his patients. My daughter is not afraid to go to the dentist anymore. His dental assistants are good. The dental assistants seem to have a good rapport with Dr. Leaf. They always take notes from Dr. Leaf when he is working with a patient. The office is very kid friendly! There are two "old school" arcade games which the kids love to play while they wait.

I am happy with my experience here. I have been bringing my son here for 2 years. We started when we were in the military and once my spouse was retired the staff continued to work with us pay the monthly bill. The staff is friendly and they almost all have an accent but if ask them to slow down they will. The discussions are done in public unless you ask to talk privately. I will keep coming here.

We've seen Dr. Leaf since 2002. He's a good listener who offers dental advice in clear, low-key terms. His staff members are supportive and respectful, too. His office is clean, well-lit, and comfortable, with a fun vibe. (Gotta love the Ms. Pac-Man arcade machine and fish tank.) There's a reason he's had returning patients, including us, for many years. Recommended.

Horrible! They claim to be a pediatric dental office but if your child has any anxiety about the dentist (and what kid doesn't?) they do nothing to help with that PLUS THEY ALSO CHARGE YOU AN EXTRA $80 DOLLARS PER VISIT to see them before hours so that your kids's crying can't be heard by other, unsuspecting patients. My 5 year old daughter was completely traumatized by their staff.
And then the Office Manager insisted that I need to pay another $80 to have them follow up on the filling they gave her that was causing her pain. So, now I have to find and pay another dentist to fix their mistakes -- they were not even remotely concerned about her pain -- just their money and reputation. In this day in age, the dental office doesn't have to be a torture chamber but this place definitely is just that! Spare your kids from this place!

Here are the positives and negatives from my perspective. PRO- Dr. Leaf was very friendly, energetic and upbeat with the kids. He put my child at ease which isn't always easy. Office decorations were space related and fun for kids. Staff was friendly. Con- 1. This office does not use dental hygienist to clean the teeth. He has dental assistants which do the x-rays, brush, floss, and apply floride with a gloved finger.
I prefer to expertise and time and education that a dental hygienists spends cleaning the teeth. The assistant was very friendly but they don't do any scraping. 2. The exam area is one open room with roughly 4 chairs in it. The dentist moves from one patient to another rapid fire. There is no privacy whatsoever. You get to hear about everyones dental condition in the room.
I just felt like it was a very rushed appointment. 3. The two dental assistants we communicated with were pleasant but difficult for my child to understand because of their accents. I think I will find a different place in the future. It wasn't bad but not as good as it can be.
