We came to Dr Starr at the recommendation of Diciccio Orthodontics where my son's are receiving orthodontic treatment. We were in need of a good, tried and proven dentist after learning our current dentist wasn't diagnosing cavities. See my full review of Bullard Dental Plaza. The experience there has caused my teen son to go from a trusting compliant dental patient to one of mistrust, constant questioning and dread.
We needed a dentist that wouldn't let us down, badly! Dr. Starr is extremely thorough. From xray to hands on looking he checked out every surface of his teeth and mouth. Both my son and I felt Dr Starr had my son's best interest in mind when treatment was recommended for 3 cavities and possible extraction. While I didn't have the treatment done with Dr Starr, it was only because he didn't offer sedation.
We went to Golden Hills Dental for sedation treatment. See my review for Golden Hills Dental experience. After treatment at Golden Hills we were referred to an Oral Surgeon. We ended up going to the one recommended by Dr Starr Instead. Dr Starr, the Oral Surgeon and Dr Diciccio all work in the same building and the team approach is second to none!
They call each other to discuss the case as a team of 3 and it's just amazing. After our appt with the Oral Surgeon, Dr Starr requested we come in for an appt. He discussed with us what the Oral Surgeon was planning and wanted to be sure we were 100% on board with what was to be done, wanted to be clear it was not he who was recommending extraction but the Oral Surgeon.
My son will have his 12 year molar extracted tomorrow & Dr Starr didn't want us to make any rash decisions because once it's gone, it's gone. He would rather drill out the decay and put in a temporary filling, give the tooth time to fully come in & reassess. But there was still a chance it would end up needing a root canal and crown or pulled later on.
We opted just to pull it. I feel he cares very much for his patients. He is very thorough and he is clear in his communication. I've learned my son tends to get stuck in his head & doesn't process clearly nor quickly what's being said when stressed. He stopped listening after diagnosis of 3 cavities and possible extraction. Dr Starr took time to explain over again what they were planning and why and showed him on the xray what he saw.
I don't think Dr Starr understood all that my son had endured prior to this appt. When I asked about sedation to avoid further pain to my son He joked about "No pain no gain right?" likely not realizing the gravity of his comment. I'm hoping it's not because he has become numb to the process of drilling cavities. For him it's an every day thing, but for my son this whole experience has been quite life changing.
We will continue to go to Dr Starr. The office is clean, staff is amazingly efficient and kind and we really like Dr Starr. Plus, he's in our insurance network, works with our ortho dr & is here in Fresno should we need him in a hurry.

I set up an appointment for all 4 of us. My husband, 12 year old and my 3 year old. It was my lil ones first appointment, and they were so sweet. They were very gentle, and spoke to her very friendly. My other daughter also said they were very nice to her as well. As for me, my teeth are so messed up but they didn't look at the xrays as if I was an ogre and that made me feel good. Nice office, attentive and courteous staff. I'm 'almost' looking forward to going to my next visit.
