If I could give these people 0 stars I would. After over 15 years of being a devoted patient, I'm switching immediately to a different dental office. The front desk girls are rude, condescending, and impatient, with complete disregard or understanding for their long-time paying customers. Stay clear of, and far away from this place--many better dentist options now in SF!

Terrible service. They took 1300 for service and did the crown incorrectly and pain lasted couple more months. I had to go to another dentist after that to get it fixed. They didn't even work with the insurance properly and I had to pay the full bill. They threatened to send it to collection if I don't pay the huge bill.

I've only gone here for regular cleanings and xrays, but have had nothing to complain about over several visits. They do not try to sell you unnecessary procedures and are great with educating you on your oral health. They also waived my fees after cleaning when they found I am no longer in network.

Update: after over an hour on the phone with Delta, we discovered that South Beach Dental had incorrectly filed my claim 5 times! I was insured by Delta Dental at the time of service, South Beach Dental incorrectly filed my claim over and over, and now they are seeking payment from me. The receptionist was incredibly rude even though I explained to her Delta Dental informed me I did not owe the balance, they told me patient responsibility is $0. Unbelievable that I had to call Delta Dental twice and spend hours on the phone only to discover the fault lies with Delta Dental.
I will never ever return, I'll never recommend anyone to this dentist office. Of course, no response to my email laying everything out for them, complete with dates and the reason my claim was repeatedly denied. Horrible customer service. If they continue to try to collect this balance from me, I will dispute their claim with the evidence from Delta Dental. In the meanwhile I am making a claim of my own - to the better business bureau.

My preferred dentist is Dr. Becky Chen. She always has a great positive attitude that makes dental visits enjoyable. What makes her such a great dentist is a next level precision that results in healthy teeth with the least amount of pain possible. If dentists were like workout trainers, my previous dentists were body builders that left me feeling like "no pain, no gain". Dr. Becky Chen is like a yoga instructor with a low impact and zen-like approach that is highly effective.
She is truly exceptional and I can't imagine going anywhere else. I have been going to South Beach Dental since 2011 and the office experience has always been pleasant. The staff is very attentive and professional. I have never experienced a long wait to see the dentist. The office space is welcoming with a modern feel and new equipment. I have Delta Dental insurance and have never had any issues.
There are also additional amenities that are a nice touch. Free coffee and water bottles are available in the waiting area. At the end of visits they offer a pouch with a toothbrush, floss, and travel sized toothpaste. There is also a jar with lip gloss available for customers. You can also get 90 minutes of free parking in the building's underground lot (accessible off Townsend St. between 3rd & 4th St).
To get your parking ticket validated you have to make a purchase at the Safeway. My most recent visit had extra COVID-19 precautions in place that made me feel safe going to the dentist.

I'd be lying if I said going to the dentist is ever a fun experience but it's is just something that needs to be done. I had a pre-Covid appointment that I needed to cancel. They emailed me asking if I wanted to reschedule. I was on vacation with no where to go and decided this would be a good time to get the pearly whites cleaned. I appreciated the gentle reminder because I wasn't sure they were open and am pretty lazy with such appointments.
The appointment itself was pretty short. The hygienist was nice and friendly. They provide you with glasses so you're not getting filth from your own mouth thrown at you while cleaning (I know. Gross! But you asked for details.) Given Covid and all, they have a few different hand sanitizer stations and also some air purifying equipment in each room.
This made me feel safe. I've been here twice in the last year and both times the service was quick. I saw two different dentists and they both made me feel comfortable. I didn't feel like they were trying to tag on some unnecessary service or push for more. Overall, great experience.

My dad was military, so going to the dentist and getting medical checks and shots were standard operating procedure in our family. So was moving, and I continued to move a lot after I left my parents' home. One thing that has not changed in more than 65 years is going to the dentist twice a year. As a result, I have been to a lot of dentists in a lot of States and practices.
As of today, I have been going to South Beach Dental for more than ten years, and I even cross the Bay Bridge to go there (starting six years ago). I like the professionalism and care. The staff is also friendly, but not so friendly that things fall behind schedule. Hence, I am in and out - without feeling like a number. Just the way I like it: Courteous, punctual, clean and professional. Winning combination!

I've just gotten off a call with South Beach Dental who not only refused me service, but also refused to apologize for charging me $500 for a dental cleaning that never occurred due to their office cancelling my cleaning and never following up. Not long after my cancelled appointment, I experienced a dental emergency, called their office and emailed in an attempt to see a doctor - only to be scolded by one of their office staff that it was MY FAULT for not having come in sooner.
Which I would have, except that they cancelled my appointment and never returned my calls or emails. In an attempt to receive compensation for the mistaken charge as well as try to finally see a dentist, the office staff passed around the phone from one vapid receptionist to the next who REFUSED to refund me, did not apologize, did not take responsibility for the 12 emails I sent over the course of 4 months, and not once did they ask how I was doing since the emergency I faced.
The dentists were fine, always friendly enough for me to go back. However, they should know that their office staff is the most vile, condescending, manipulative group of mean girls I've ever encountered in a professional setting. If you are a future patient considering this establishment - GO ELSEWHERE. They are rude, crude, and unlawfully taking money from patients as many other reviews have stated below.
If the attitude of the office staff doesn't turn you off - at least heed the warning of other reviewers as their financial handling is criminal and will cost you your credit score as well as numerous charges on appointments that were never fulfilled.

Had 4 fillings, very basic in two sessions. One dentist couldn't have cared less about me and the whole thing took 45 min and felt very in and out, those two fillings fell out causing two teeth to break, and needing $11k in implants, root canals, and additional surgery. The other dentist was clearly her first session ever, took 2 hours, and was a bit painful. Granted those fillings have been doing great, but that should be expected, not the exception.
To top it off they have now put a $65 collections charge on my credit report for a charge I had no idea about. I had paid with insurance and at time of service and now I have a collections account on my record for the next several years on top of the expense, time off work, pain, and other surgeries I need to go through to fix what this place broke in my face.

I have been a patient of South Beach Dental for six years now and I love them! I don't know why I haven't left a review much sooner than now. My primary dentist, Dr. Becky Chen, has a great chair-side manner, and she is equally great at caring for my teeth. She is very instructive about my tooth care, and getting my teeth cleaned by her is actually a pleasure.
I once asked Dr. Chen why she never tried to sell me any extra dental work, such as Invisalign or braces, like so many of my other dentists had, and she said, "I only care about the health your teeth. If you want braces I'm happy to refer you to someone, but your teeth seem to be in fine shape and that's what's important to me." I could use braces on my bottom teeth, but she said it'd be mostly cosmetic and to alleviate some crowding, but that a good flossing regimen would be sufficient to keep those teeth and gums in good health. The staff at South Beach dental is also great!

I just had a cleaning this morning and inquired about getting fitted for a night guard for grinding my teeth at night, the office manager told me that they could submit it to my insurance. She then informed me that I had a credit on my account because I overpaid for some work I had done in December of 2017 and they could use that money too, over $700.
Nobody told me that I had overpaid them a year and a half ago. She told me a manager would get back to me as to why no one notified me. *I overpaid them 20 months ago and no one told me. Had I not asked about getting fitted for a night guard, I still wouldn't know.* How on Earth is that acceptable? I have been a patient here for nearly 4 years, generally speaking the experience isn't bad but this bordering on theft. When you owe them money, they send you a bill in a week, when they owe you money, you won't ever know.

I've been coming here since 2016 and it used to be a consistently great experience when Dr. Abrams was a part of the team! For some reason, within the past 2 years, the dentist I'd see for cleanings has been different nearly every time which would be fine. but not all seem to have the same standard of care and detail. 3 cleanings who may have been the worst - just so sloppy with water and saliva getting everywhere - it was really uncomfortable. Was told to not use a Waterpik.
Nearly looked for another practice after that, but decided to play dentist roulette and see who I got a few months later. This next dentist was great! Seemed caring and neat work! So I asked to get rescheduled with him. And in my next appointment, I'm again treated by someone totally different. And it was ok. But I think I may explore other options now since I never know who or what to expect anymore.

Sold me work that didn't need to be done for a while (also sold teeth whitening to my wife, and after we paid and wasted a Saturday morning coming to an appointment, told her she wasn't a good candidate for it). Work is done by different random dentists, so you feel like you're on an assembly line. Regarding the work itself, the filling was way too high and it's still painful, and the crown doesn't feel like an anatomically normal tooth. Not even going back for them to fix it, driving two hours to see my old dentist.

Upselling aside, I've had a positive experience coming here the past few years for basic cleanings. Pros: Staff are very nice, my appointments usually start on time, they are open every other Saturday which is a BIG plus, they are above the Safeway and Safeway provides 90 minutes of free parking if you buy something there Cons: they always try to upsell me which is a bit annoying.
Every time I go in there they assume I want an X-ray by default (which is not only expensive but I also want to minimize the number of X-rays pointed directly at my head). Also this last time they suggested I start coming in every 4 months instead of 6! (And they gave the same spiel to my friend). If you ignore the annoying upselling it's fine.

I had been going to this place for several years. Last summer I had a disagreement regarding charges from my toddlers visit. Initially I was under the impression that the front desk person and my husband had agreed on charges and settled the bill. Months later I received a notification that the account was being transferred to a collection agency. Freaked out about my credit I called the office and got a hold of Gina the office manager.
She kindly explained the misunderstanding and the charges applied and agreed to give me 50% off the remaining balance and ensure the account doesn't go to collection. I found her to be caring and great. I recommend this place 100%!

I have been coming to South Beach Dental for almost 15 years now. If you're looking for an amazing Dental Hygienist, please ask for Lovepreet Singh, he's the best. thorough, gentle, dedicated and extremely professional. I'm bummed to let the cat out of the bag but he's too amazing not to recommend! Dr Lai is my dentist and he's amazing!

Been here twice now to see Dr. Lotfi for my checkup and cleaning starting April 2017. I received text as well as email reminders 1-2 weeks before my appointment with option to confirm the appointment (which was made after my last visit 6 months ago). Got there on time and was seen within 5 minutes. Everyone from the staff to hygienist to the dentist were all very professional and friendly.
Love that they don't try to gouge me off like the last place I went (King St Dental - DO NOT go there). Also love their location (3 mins' walk from my apartment) and their Saturday appointments!

Would not recommend - unprofessional and incredibly aggressive with payments. Even reported my balance to the bill collections agency. When I got my first cleaning, the dentist told me that my insurance covers two cleanings per year and recommended that I get my second one before the year ends (this was in November so I got another one a month later).
After my second cleaning South Beach Dental gives me a call and tells me that the second cleaning was not covered under insurance. After disputing this charge, I find out in the mail that this office had sent my $150 cleaning bill to the collections agency. Their response to me on the phone when I said they would be receiving a poor review: "We have tens of thousands of customers and don't care about what reviews say about us" So there ya go.

Love love love my dentist here. I've been coming to SBD for about 3 years now and have never had an issue. My advice would be to book as far in advance as possible since getting an appt with your dentist can sometimes be difficult. Also, be aware of their cancellation policy. It's no joke and in the city, I completely understand why they charge.

My friend lost a teeth and worried if he would need a teeth implant. I visited south beach dental several years ago and Dr Chen was really good so I suggested my friend to get a consulting visit. He took my advise and booked an appointment with Dr. Quant. The appointment was basically just Xray and the dentist looked at it and told my friend he lost a teeth.
My friend asked what would be the plan to fix it. Dr. Quant told him that he had to book a 2nd appointment to discuss the plan. The first appoint costed $140 because my friend paid out of pocket without dental insurance. The outcome was exactly what he already knew that he lost a teeth. He still didn't know what would be the procedure to fix it.
It was very odd why the dentist would not tell my friend in the first appointment what will be the procedure to fix the lost teeth. It can be just some simple and quick explanation to let my friend underhand the next step. Instead he had to book a 2nd appointment only to talk about the plan? Later my friend went to some other dentist and got x-ray, teeth cleaning, exam, and the quote for the implants. The appointment was just $100.

Overall, the hygienists and dentists are always lovely. But I'm switching to a new place closer to home. Here's why: 1- The cleaning itself doesn't feel thorough. There's less scraping done here than at other dental offices. I've noticed that it's done mostly with a waterpick, which ironically a staff member advised against using a waterpick over flossing.
So why use it during a professional deep clean? (obviously i'm not an expert, but found this perplexing) 2- Why is there so little calendar availability for appointments relative to the dental staff size? If I have to wait 6 weeks after my checkup to get a filling or two done, it's indicative. I think they keep accepting new patients at the expense of their current clientele. Update - business' response (6/21/18): I never ask for 9am or 5pm appointments, as these are the worst times for traffic. Again, I've had to wait 6 weeks to schedule an appointment for a simple cavity filling. 3- Finding the office the first or second time is challenging - I think it would be helpful to email or advise directions for first-time visitors. (Find the elevator at Safeway, 3rd floor, turn left, buzz suite 8, turn right, left at the very end of the hall) 4- Not their fault, but the location next to Caltrain sucks.
I live 3 miles away and it takes 45+ mins to get home! Sometimes I'm waiting 10 mins for Lyft while dealing with aggressive homeless people + the Caltrain crowd. If you opt for the bus, that can take a long time too.

I was a patient here for years and recommended the place to all my friends. The quality of care was fantastic and I had no issues, until I moved in 2014. Apparently I had an outstanding bill and they waited over two years to surprise me with a collection agency claim on my credit report for a trivial amount of money. They had my email, phone number, and I had mail forwarding set up, yet they did not call, write, or email me once to notify me of this bill. Instead, they sent it to collections years later and caused a massive hit on my credit score that I am currently disputing.
This is not how you treat patients that have paid all bills on time and recommended you to their friends. I hope they learn that they can call patients or make an effort to get in touch with them instead of sending them to collections silently.

Going to the dentist in not my favorite thing. Especially when I have cavities, two small ones. First the environment at South Beach Dental is really nice, I can distract myself with the view. The staff are wonderful. They use the latest technology. I only needed one tooth numbed and usually I will have pain later in the day from the shot, but that was not the case.
They are making a new night guard and it was an also a much easier process than my former dentist. I highly recommend South Beach Dental. This was my second visit but my son has been a patient of Dr. Watson's for years now. I regret it took me so long to make the change.
