Philly Smiles is a family dental office with family values set in the heart of historic Philadelphia. At Philly Smiles, we strive to create an environment and atmosphere that is welcoming to patients both new and old, by providing accessible, specialized dental services and care for all. When you step into our office you are not just a patient, but a member of our Philly Smiles family. Just like any family member, we want you to leave a visit healthy and happy. We call it brotherly love around here.

Services
With decades of combined experience, the Philly Smiles team is next to none when it comes to the level of care and compassion in which we provide our patients. Each member of the team works under a common core value: to treat each other, both colleagues and patients, as family. Because we are family.
Emergency situations can, and often, arise at the most inopportune moments. We know. We've dealt with many - as doctors and as patients. When an emergency happens, you should always seek help immediately. Mouth pain is your body telling you something in there is wrong. The longer you wait after losing a tooth, the more of a challenge it becomes to put it back in.
Proper dental care is necessary to ensure overall quality of life. We know that. We also know that proper dental care can be costly for some. To ensure that all patients receive the care that they need, we strive to provide treatment that is financially painless for all. Sometimes dental care can't wait.

I have been afraid to go see a dentist most of my adult life. I finally got talked into coming to the office (a million thanks to Julia) a few years ago. Everyone here has transformed my smile (and my anxiety towards seeing a dentist, they're seriously THE BEST, gentle, friendly, not intimidating, amazing group). I cannot recommend them enough

I am the world's biggest baby when it comes to the dentist due to past dental trauma (NOT from Philly Smiles) and I am always treated with the kindest and compassionate care. They make me feel very comfortable and are very patient with me. They are also up on the most current dental technology so I know that I am getting the most up to date care (bye dark fillings and crowns). I would recommend them to anyone. They offer excellent dental care.

Philly Smiles is the BEST dentist office. I have been going to them for close to (or more than) 30 years. They are professional, responsive, caring and wonderful. They treat everyone like family. They have an accessible emergency line. Their staff is great. I cannot say enough good things about them. When you have to go to the dentist, you should use them.

Wow! Where to begin? I had an emergency, and Danita was very kind and helpful in accommodating me to be seen as soon as possible. Crystal was super professional, very knowledgeable and fixed my problem flawlessly right away! When you enter this practice, you don't feel like visiting a dentist. The architecture is top-notch, their decor is royal and stunning. Even the chairs are not intimidating! Go ahead and give them a try. You will not disappoint!

Approachable, knowledgeable and very kind staff - every person I spoke with was not only easy to get along with, they also took time to explain everything they were going to do before they did it (or answer my questions about the building). Then they knocked off a year's worth of coffee stains with great care and a sense of humor. This really is a great team!

I was visiting from out of town and decided to visit Philly Smiles for a routine clearing - which Keisha (the hygienist on duty) did a great job and I experienced no pain really as I normally do at my old Dentist's office. I also met with Dr. Joe Roberts who was extremely kind, patient, and ready to explain his findings after reviewing my xrays. I was concerned about a minor gap between my top front teeth and Dr. Roberts said that because my teeth were not actually shifting, he would recommend a filling the gap versus getting braces and the procedure could be completed same day.
It took about 30 mins to complete and everything looks soo natural! The process also involved minimal pain and discomfort and I attribute to how knowledgeable and careful Dr. Roberts and his team are. I am very thankful for the work done and how awesome the Philly Smiles team is. I will definitely come back to see them again whenever I am in need of dental work!

I'm so upset with this dentist. I had my front crowns replaced with them. My first set had been in for 12 years with no problem, and I only switched them for cleanliness. They did my crowns at PhillySmiles and I immediately felt like one of them was not in correctly. I let them know but they didn't seem to believe me. I pushed the issue until the dentist looked and she did minimum filing.
Then two days later the crown fell out while I was brushing my teeth. The next dentist put it back in and assured me everything was fine. Now I'm 1 year later and the same crown fell out. I've gone to another dentist and the new dentist is telling me the crown does not fit in the space so falling out will continue to be a problem unless I get a new crown made. This procedure at PhillySmiles was super expensive and they certainly didn't do expert work.

I originally went to Philly Smiles because, frankly, I was terrified of going to the dentist, and Dr. Roberts was referred to me via a close friend. Dr. Roberts curbed any fear I had. He was great. After my second visit, it turned out I needed more work done via an oral surgeon. I went to the surgeon he referred me to. It turns out I would need up to $11,000.00 worth of work done.
My anxiety returned. I went to my consultation ( A total of 15 minutes for 300 dollars. Which is fine; I get it). In the meantime, Dr. Roberts provided me with a temporary filling. The filling has since cracked, leaving me in a fair amount of on-again-off-again discomfort. I recently called to schedule an appointment to get the filling repaired, and I was essentially turned away.
Both times I called, the receptionist was borderline humiliating. The unprofessionalism and lack of empathy I experienced were unreal and borderline offensive. I was told, "If I am in pain, Philly Smiles is not the place for me." I wish I were exaggerating. So for this experience, I am giving Philly Smiles one star. I would give zero if possible. I'm going to find a new dentist now. -Christopher Semick

Always, always, always the most professional and friendly medical office I go to. From reception to service I feel like I'm the only person that matters. Every detail, no matter how seemingly insignificant, is managed before you even think of it. And cutting right to the chase - I trust Dr Roberts without any question. His dental plan and his steady hand are the only ones for me and my family. I could not imagine going anywhere else.

Dr. Roberts is really kind, gentle and cares about the well being of his patients. He takes the time to answer my questions even when pretty busy. He keeps up to date with the current tools and stays abreast of all having to do with dentistry. I also admire that he is always teaching, bringing others along where their interests align with the profession. You can't go wrong if you're seeking a good dentist.

I've been going to see Dr. Roberts and his expert team since I was a kid, about 25 years. I don't even live in Philly anymore, but they are still the only practice I go see. Many of their employees have been there for 10-20 years too, if that gives you an idea of their operation. You will not find a more beautiful office in the country. Immaculate on all floors and crevices, just how they leave your smile. I honestly look forward to a visit. Ever hear someone say that about a dentist practice?

I have been going to Philly Smiles for about 5 years now after avoiding the dentist for several years due to anxiety. The Philly Smiles dentists, hygienists and staff have made my experience going to the dentist much easier and relaxed. I have gotten my wisdom teeth removed, cavities filled and deep cleanings at Philly Smiles and I am extremely pleased with the work they have done. I recently moved outside of the city and I still make the drive back for my cleanings. I would highly recommend Philly Smiles.

There appears to be a theme with PhillySmiles: unprofessional. Similar to what others have shared, I have also had a negative billing experience with PhillySmiles. I found the office through my employer portal, which indicated the dentist at PhillySmiles was in my network. When scheduling my first (and ultimately, last) visit, I shared my insurance information and confirmed that this practice would be in-network.
The quality of the cleaning was fine, however, the dentist who saw me suggested I have a filling. Knowing my insurance covers such costs, I agreed. All was well until I checked out, expecting to pay my co-pay. That's when I saw the bill. PhillySmiles, after receiving all my insurance information, had an out-of-network dentist work on me. In the end, I paid a couple hundred out of pocket for this bait-and-switch unprofessionalism.
At no point was PhillySmiles sympathetic or offered to remedy the situation. My insurance provider had their hands tied, as I was seen by a dentist who was out of their network. What's more? Since switching dentists, I have called PhillySmiles 5 times to get a release form for my x-rays to share with my new dentist. I have yet to receive the release form and at this point, I don't think they're capable of doing so. Look somewhere else, Philadelphia has plenty of qualified dentist offices.

The work they did on me was great, no question there. The reason I gave this place such a bad rating was their inability to provide information about which insurances cover here. I clearly gave them my insurance when asked for it as I was a new patient. They didn't mention anything about them not being in network and don't except Dental Delta and when I went to checkout and thinking I was going to pay a copay, I was thrown with a $700 dollar out of pocket bill. They need to do a better job in screening in the beginning to let people like me know if the insurance will cover or not and not wait till we come in and pay at the end.

I debated writing this review for awhile but think it's important to share my experience. I went to this office about a year ago (10/17) and had a really negative experience. The office is really nice and had a lot of decorations but the doctor I saw was not good. I have a fear of dentists and let them know this in advance. I saw Dr. Patel and he was really nice and comforting at first but it didn't last.
After looking at my xrays and giving an exam he said he saw 4 main quadrants of concerns and that I would need to have fillings done. I asked how many cavities and he said "I don't want to freak you out so I don't want to give a specific number." I asked again and he still wouldn't give a specific number of cavities he saw but kept repeating that he saw areas of concern.
I was speechless and didn't know how to respond. When I checked out they asked me to schedule my next appointment to get started on the cavities and I asked how many there were and she said 11. I was shocked. I didn't have any pain except minor pain in 1 tooth that was off and on. I was stunned and left to go back to work. I ended up calling back and talking to the receptionist (Danita) about how I thought it was unprofessional that he refused to tell me how many cavities I had.
She repeatedly made excuses for him instead of hearing my concerns and talked over me. He ended up calling me back but I didn't want to talk to him because I felt the trust was already broken. I shouldn't have to get information from the receptionist because the doctor refuses to answer my questions. Also, if someone has a cavity it's billed per tooth so there should be transparency between the doctor and patient so that the patient has an idea of how much everything is going to cost.
I finally went to see another dentist who took new xrays and compared the xrays I had taken here. She saw no cavities only 2 teeth we need to watch and told me she was glad I didn't go back to this place. The only thing I'm appreciative of is that they prescribed me toothpaste which I believe helped reverse some of the demineralization in my teeth. If you go here, please be careful or they might try to rip you off. I'm so grateful I decided to not come back here.

Edit 3: Dr. Stevie reached out tonight and apologized for what happened today, She explained that there is no manager at the practice, so it was proven that Julia did lie about being the manager and was being very unprofessional and rude. She canceled my appointment under the guise of saying the doctor was not comfortable treating me but I was being punished for writing an honest review, which is extremely childish and unacceptable on Julia's part as she is a grown adult and she should be embarrassed for not only being caught in a lie but displaying the worst customer service and behavior I have ever experienced. Dr. Stevie said she will be dealt with soon but I honestly don't believe it and she'll continue to work there with no real consequences, which is a shame.
But like everything else with this practice, I took everything that was said with a grain of salt despite after what Dr. Stevie said to me. Again she was nice and did her best to rectify the situation but that wasn't enough unfortunately. Regardless, the damage is done and I won't be returning to this office. Note: The Edward J review that was just posted only 6 hours ago is written by someone associated with practice/friend of one of the staff as it praises the front staff and Dr. S in general after only a few hours after I was posted mine, which is clearly suspect, please avoid this place! Christina T is also associated with the practice! Edit 2: I spoke to Julia again to voice my concerns, she kept saying "okay" repeatedly and not actually listening to me.
I pointed out to her that this dentist office was kept trying to upsell me on waterpiks again and agin during the appointment, how I again didn't feel comfortable with a general dentist removing my retainer, and how I am being denied service because of a yelp review, which I stated is bad business model and she hung up on me. To be denied service simply because of an honest yelp review is very childish and speaks volumes of the type of people that run this place.
I remember making my first appointment to see them and mentioned their website about free Xrays, Julia told me to ignore it and that the website hasn't been updated in years, imagine that! Please avoid this place at all cost, they only care about money and not the well being of their customers. Do not be fooled by the positive reviews. Julia is not the manager of the dentist office, she is a receptionistand the fact that she kept lying about it is very telling, along with saying Dr. Stevie was not in today but then suddenly didn't want to speak with me, so which is it? Take all the positive reviews by face value! I didn't know lying was part of their business model!

I saw Dr Patel for an emergency. Before I continue just know I am truly afraid of the dentist. It kept me away for years. I called the emergency line and he called back in minutes listening to my cries. I came in first thing the next morning and knowing I had so many issues he listened to me and only addressed my emergency issue at the time. This was so new to me.
I was always overwhelmed by all that was needed that I never began. Long story short, I addressed that issue with his guidance and now continuing my care with him. Thank you Dr P for understanding what I need and taking the time to be patient so I will not hide again.

Dr. Ames is the best! Best work I have ever had done and the place is so nice its like a whole other world from any other dentist I have ever been to. I have never enjoyed going to the dentist, far from it, but Dr. Ames is so sweet she actually gave me a hug. Sometimes I wonder why someone who clearly has so much love in her heart would want to stab people in the mouth all day, but when I come to Philly Smiles it makes me realize how on the path of life sometimes we have to do whatever is neccessary, even if that means being aware of how clean your own teeth are for the entire week after you visit. And after the feeling of the side of my mouth returns, I always feel a little wiser.

THE BEST, EVER! I can't say enough about Dr.'s Ames and Roberts. They are simply amazing. The staff is phenomanal; helpful, kind, and easy going. Dr. Roberts is just so great. He is gentle, compassionate, and real. I was not blessed with the best teeth but they have helped me 100% of the way. From cleanings, to fillings, to crowns for my implants I am always satisfied with the service.
I never feel as though my service was rushed and they are not rude or get annoyed when you ask questions. The ambiance is AWESOME! No cold room with bright lights scremaing in your face. They will even offer you a blanket if you feel chilly.

Dr. Roberts is the best! If you are looking for a new dentist, look no further than PhillySmiles. I've tried many dentists over the years, and time and again I keep coming back to Dr. Roberts and the PhillySmiles team! From the time you walk in they are kind and ensuring you understand everything going on with your appointment. The hygienists are thorough with their cleanings and Dr. Roberts goes above and beyond to keep his patients comfortable in his chair.
As a nurse it's important to me to see a dentist who has good bedside manner and treats me with respect while also ensuring I'm taking proper care of my teeth. Overall I would highly recommend this practice to anyone in the Philly area!

Dr. Roberts and the whole Philly Smiles team are the best! They all go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and informed. Dr. Roberts has been my dentist for over 20 years, and has always been amazing! He explains procedures so that you can understand, is flexible in schedule, and makes you feel calm and comfortable. For someone who doesn't have great teeth and spends a lot of time at the dentist, I always leave happy! I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a dentist in the Philly area!

Dr. Roberts and his team are simply the best. Very gentle, detailed and caring, they make coming to the dentists simple, fast and painless. I come here for teeth cleanings but also decided to do Zoom whitening and some basic restoration to fix a few chips. The whole experience was excellent. Crystal talked to me about the whole process and settled my nerves a bit.
I did the zoom and I have no regrets! My teeth super white and Dr. Roberts fixed the chips so that I feel amazing about my smile. If you are afraid of the dentist go to Philly Smiles. They will take the best care of you and make it a very relaxing experience!

I would give out 6 stars if I could - Dr. Roberts is the dentist to go in Philly if you need tooth extraction of any sort. My experience overall was very pleasant with Dr. Roberts and his team. Most importantly, the surgery was very successful. I was really nervous about getting eight teeth extracted to make room for my orthodontics treatment, but Dr. Roberts created a very soothing environment during my surgery and I felt very comfortable, the whole process was not painful at all.
They took x-rays (3D) to evaluate the condition of each tooth before the treatment and I felt more confident about the surgery after reviewing the x-rays result with Dr. Roberts. The healing process went well I only used two Oxycodone pills the first day and never needed it afterwards. The bill was reasonable I think - my insurance (Aetna) covered part of it and I have a HSA account to pay for the rest. I highly recommend Dr. Roberts and his team.

New patient alert! I called to schedule an appointment about two weeks ago and got the first available slot. The receptionist was really sweet. She even called me back to give information about my co pay. The office is not far from my job so it was a nice walk to Rittenhouse Sq. I was amazed by the decor and elaborate furnishings. It did not feel like a dentist office at all.
They have this really cute barber chair! I had Dr. Ames work on my teeth and she was really sweet and knowledgeable about dental care. I am actually scheduled to do an extraction with Dr. Roberts. Such an awesome experience.

Ever meet anyone who has amazing, pearly white teeth, and a gorgeously perfect smile? They probably go to Philly Smiles. Simply put, this place is world class, from the care you receive from two of the most talented dentists on the planet, to the rest of the care team. Truth be told, I really feared the dentist before I found Dr Roberts and PhillySmiles.
I wasn't fond of the discomfort associated with drilling, Novocain, and the experience of being scolded by the dentist and hygienists every 6 months for not flossing 12 times per day. Because of this, I've had over a dozen dentists over my lifetime until I found Dr Roberts and PhillySmiles. You realize that you've come to an extraordinary place as soon as you walk through the front door.
With most dentists you expect to be walking into a sterile looking medical facility, but here your experience starts with walking through the front door into a gorgeously appointed parlor (complete with fireplace and piano) of a turn of the century home. The treatment rooms are designed with your comfort in mind, with great music hand-picked from a playlist picked by the staff, soft lighting and comfortable pillows to ease you into the treatment.
There is even art work on the ceiling! They really get what it's like to be a patient, and it is there that I first realized that I could actually be in complete relaxation and comfort.almost spa-style. Oh yes.the dental care.the real reason for your visit! When getting cosmetic or restorative work done, you want an absolutely meticulous artist and sculptor.and Dr Roberts is absolutely out of this world talented.
I had a crown that needed to be replaced, and the temporary crown that he created right there in the office looked better than the permanent crown that was being replaced! The color and shape were a perfect match.on a temporary crown, people! If this is how much care Dr Roberts takes to create a temporary crown, I can't even imagine what the permanent crown will look like. Dr Roberts is all about pain elimination, not just management like at other practices.
I always thought I would have to suffer through some discomfort during treatment, but he ABSOLUTELY insisted that nobody had to be at all uncomfortable. Even his injections don't hurt.something I never experienced before! Last but not least, my visits here were NEVER about a guilt trip.unlike my visits at other dentists. Yes, I proudly do not floss as often as I should, and Dr Roberts never made me feel bad about it.
He really welcomed me as I was. I never knew how great my teeth could look, and how comfortable a dentist office could be until I started coming here for treatment. One visit and you'll be hooked, too!

BEST DENTIST EVER! I kid you not, I drive down from Manhattan to experience the professional and comfortable services of Dr. Roberts and his incredibly courteous and excellent staff. Not only is everyone involved in the operation top-notch, so is the ambiance and physical space of this office. Set in a beautiful townhouse on Rittenhouse Square, you'll feel like you've stepped back in time to an era when Railroad barons ruled the country. Painless Novocaine. absolutely incredible, I didn't feel a pinch of the needle, Dr. Roberts is a pro at administering this often-times uncomfortable part of dentistry.
The very considerate technician put music headphones on me and away we went. I'm on my way to a mercury-free mouth. Don't think twice, make an appointment, you will thank me later.
